We are looking for a Summer Analyst Intern to join our investment team. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, detail oriented, thrive with light supervision, and be willing to get involved across all aspects of the firm’s operations.

This member can work remotely or out of our offices in San Francisco or New York. We are looking to recruit for this role as soon as possible.

Responsibilities

- Work with our investment team to identify and develop investment reports

- Proactively conduct research within our key verticals of focus

- Prepare summary materials for potential new investment opportunities, including investment memos and other supporting research

- Participate in and support the investment process from opportunity identification through due diligence and deal closing

- Support our portfolio companies across a number of operating areas on a project basis

- Manage internal tools and processes, including working with our deal pipeline

- Ability to work closely with members of the Valia team on internal projects

- Occasional ad-hoc tasks as required to support the team

- Continuously look to improve the organization and efficiency of every member of the team

Grand Ventures is hiring an Analyst to join our team. We are looking for candidates with a passion for venture capital, the analytical skills to lead due diligence processes, the confidence to articulate opinions on prospective investments, and a willingness to work on a wide array of tasks. As a key member of the investment team, they will actively participate in all stages of the investment process and have a seat at the table in making investment decisions. Additionally, the candidate will play a key role in implementing internal projects to further position the firm for growth and success.

By joining Grand Ventures, this individual will receive the mentorship needed to further their knowledge of venture capital and gain conviction in evaluating investment opportunities. We are looking for someone with a growth mindset who shows potential to evolve alongside the firm.

Prior investment and venture capital experience are not required, but helpful. An Analyst will have at least 2 years of business-related experience and 0-3 years of venture capital experience. 

This is a full-time role with some travel requirements (<20%). This role will be located in our Grand Rapids, MI office for at least the first 2 years. Candidates must be based in Grand Rapids or willing to relocate to the area. As the candidate grows in the role and gains more experience in venture capital, the option to relocate to one of Grand Ventures’ target investment regions can be considered.

Key Responsibilities:

Sourcing and research: identify high potential startups and help the team understand new sectors and trends.

Manage deal pipeline: organize deal pipeline, manage CRM, and create reports to help the team prioritize and focus on the most promising opportunities.

Due diligence: complete all stages of the due diligence process, including introductory calls with founders, market research, data requests, building financial models, startup customer interviews, deal negotiations, and legal review.

Support portfolio companies: provide operational support to our portfolio companies by pitching in with everything from connecting founders to prospective customers and advisors to driving strategic internal discussions.

Community building: participate in events, conferences, and demo days in order to grow our network of founders and co-investors.

Internal operations: support the team in a variety of tasks, including reporting to Limited Partners, original content creation, portfolio construction analysis, and leading internal projects to improve Grand Ventures operations.

2022 Kapor Fellows: Venture Capital

The Kapor Center is a family of three distinct organizations working under a shared mission. (SMASH: a 501(c)(3) public charity which operates STEM education programs, Kapor Capital: a seed-stage investment fund, and Kapor Foundation: a 501(c)(3) private operating foundation). The Kapor Center aims to enhance diversity, equity and inclusion in the technology and entrepreneurship ecosystem through increasing access to tech and STEM education programs, conducting research on access and opportunity in computing, investing in community organizations and gap-closing tech startups, building diverse and inclusive companies, and increasing access to capital among diverse entrepreneurs and fund managers.

For over 10 years the Kapor Center has run summer internship programs designed to provide career pathways to exponentially accelerate the number of underrepresented individuals entering tech companies, venture capital and tech-based entrepreneurship. This year the Kapor Fellows: Venture Capital Program (formerly known as the Kapor Capital Summer Associate Program) is growing to include 6 partner funds who will also host summer associates. Partner funds represent both direct investors in technology start ups and Limited Partners who invest in fund managers. Partner funds are led by diverse leadership teams and invest across a range of sectors.

In addition to working with a fund, a few summer fellows will work with a group of four Kapor Capital portfolio companies who are developing a shared offering to help low income citizens of color in cities. The companies span energy, fintech and workforce development.

We are looking for a few great candidates to fill our 2022 class. The ideal candidate will be entering an MBA, MS, JD, PhD, or a comparable graduate program in the Fall of 2022 or, alternatively going into their second (or third) year or completing their graduate studies. We are also open to individuals with a few years of startup experience looking to transition into a career in VC.

Candidates should have a strong interest in learning about the venture capital industry and a passion for start-up technology companies. All fellows will gain exposure to key areas of venture capital including financial analysis, sector due diligence, deal execution, and portfolio support.

The summer will begin with a retreat designed to introduce you to the Kapor Center, partner funds and the venture investment process. The fellows will be paired with partner firms and during the summer will complete projects aligned with their interest, as well as the needs of their partner firm. Throughout the summer, fellows will work closely with others in their summer associate class as well as partner firm staff, who will serve as colleagues and mentors. Each Friday, fellows will have professional development trainings at the Kapor Center in Oakland.

Primary Tasks:

Review and analyze pitch decks and meet with entrepreneurs

Deliver high quality analytical insights on various technologies and markets on a macro and micro level; provide input to investment team members

Provide support for various market and technology research projects. Specific activities include but are not limited to: sector research; analysis on investment portfolio returns; and financial modeling

Assist in deal execution under mentorship of investment team members. Responsibilities may include helping to draft Investment Memos and reviewing legal documentation

Complete a Summer Capstone project related to each candidates interest and each firm’s needs. Past projects have included:

Helping portfolio companies create a welcoming culture for people from diverse backgrounds

Researching what platform services other early stage VCs and technology incubators provide to entrepreneurs

Sector landscape analysis and strategy recommendation

Requirements

Strong belief in the Kapor Center’s mission to use technology to close gaps of access and opportunity for low income communities and communities of color.

Currently enrolled or recently completed an MBA, MS, JD, PhD in science, business, or other disciplines. We are also open to non-traditional candidates that can demonstrate a genuine interest in venture capital.

Demonstrated commitment to closing gaps of access, opportunity, or outcomes for low-income communities of underrepresented ethnic and racial minorities.

At least 2 years of full-time, post-undergraduate work experience.

Desire to pursue a career in venture capital ecosystem

High level of confidentiality and strong work ethic

Superior written and oral communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively to all levels of the organization and to the larger technology community.

Strong knowledge of Excel and Google Spreadsheets
