The Investment Office

The Moore Foundation’s investment office manages the foundation’s $8+ billion investment portfolio with an aim towards maintaining purchasing power, managing volatility and ensuring sufficient liquidity to fund the foundation’s grant making and operating needs. The Investment team focuses its efforts on managing the portfolio’s asset allocation across a diverse set of asset classes and selecting and monitoring investment managers within each asset class.

The Position

Our Investment Associate Program provides the opportunity for early career individuals to expand their knowledge of institutional investment management and further develop skills in investment analysis and research. After completing the program, associates typically pursue an MBA or seek the next steps in their investment career. Many associates will also pursue a CFA during their associate program.

This position is a two-year role supporting the Director of Hedge Fund Strategies in managing a multi-billion dollar investment portfolio. The portfolio is invested in institutional funds that are sponsored by leading investment managers. The foundation does not make direct investments in companies, assets, or securities.

The position is based at the foundation’s investment office inSan Francisco, California. The foundation has a hybrid working arrangements policy, and this position is required to work onsite inSan Franciscoa minimum of two days each week, and in our Palo Alto, California office a few times each year. Your role, team, or other foundation business needs may require you to work in the office more frequently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with Director to develop and implement portfolio strategies by analyzing historical returns and investment trends both domestically and abroad, monitoring current market conditions and assessing relative attractiveness of investment opportunities.

  • Work with Director to monitor and manage a world class portfolio of hedge fund investments through the ongoing evaluation of investment strategies, portfolio holdings and exposures, the drivers of performance, and organizational dynamics.

  • Work with Director to select new investments for by identifying high potential managers, participating in due diligence, and conducting detailed performance and portfolio analytics.

  • Write quarterly portfolio reviews and lead production of comprehensive annual review of portfolio composition, returns and underlying fund holdings. Present findings from analysis to investment team.

  • Monitor and reconcile monthly performance of all managers in the portfolio. Track portfolio exposures and asset allocation levels relative to targets and assist in executing and confirming all cash flows to and from managers.

  • Position provides excellent exposure to a wide range of investment strategies, as well as investments across asset classes including long-only equity, fixed income, private equity, venture capital, real estate and natural resources.

Experience And Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of two years of work experience in investment banking, management consulting, investment management, or other relevant field.

  • Exceptional organizational skills and proficiency in prioritizing assignments, handling multiple complex assignments, and setting and meeting deadlines with an orientation toward results and resolution.

  • Well-developed quantitative and analytical skills with strong grounding in investment concepts (e.g. capital markets, statistical analyses).

  • Advanced Excel modeling skills and familiarity with PowerPoint, Bloomberg, and other analytical tools and concepts.

  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently, ask questions, and use judgment. Ability to communicate concepts and distill information in an efficient, user-friendly manner is especially important.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Exceptional interpersonal and presentation skills.

  • Willingness to support and promote the foundation and colleagues through commitment to enhancing the foundation’s considerations of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Compensation And Benefits

The Moore Foundation offers a generous total compensation package that includes a competitive base salary, an incentive compensation program and comprehensive benefits to support your life, health and well-being. The package for this role includes a base salary of $125,000 and participation in an annual incentive program. This position is exempt and full-time with a two-year term.
