Department Summary

gCS Computational Biology and Translation (CBT) Department joint with Translational Medicine Ophthalmology, Metabolism, Neuroscience, Immunology and Infectious Diseases (OMNI)-Biomarker Development department at Genentech is seeking a highly motivated Intern to support our computational biology and advanced analytics. Our department provides translational science expertise to inform the clinical development of novel personalized therapeutics, and our biomarker teams investigate the molecular pathways of disease and to establish the mechanism of action of our therapeutics. We seek a candidate to join a dynamic and multi-disciplinary team to analyze large amounts of multi-omic and biomarker data generated from various stages of clinical studies. This work will advance understanding of disease heterogeneity, and generate insights that advance personalized healthcare by identifying “the right drug for the right patient at the right dose”.

The position is located located in South San Francisco, onsite.

Key Responsibilities

  • Candidates will support the data analysis of multi-omic data and biomarker data from various stages of clinical studies. Candidates with experience in data mining, machine learning and AI, GWAS, bulk and single-cell RNA-Seq analysis will be given preference.

  • Candidates will support the development of computational tools and pipelines. Candidates with experience in software engineering, high-performance and cloud computing, data visualization will be given preference.

  • A strong candidate will be able to communicate effectively and concisely to a diverse audience of scientists. Publication of a scientific or methodological abstract or paper is an important component of this position.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 6 months, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

Who You Are (Required)

Required Education:

  • You meet one of the following criteria:

  • - Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student)

  • - Must have attained a PhD

Required majors:

  • You have a background in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Computer Science or similar field.

Additional Qualifications

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

  • You enjoy applying novel informatic approaches to datasets to generate new insights to biological problems and then working closely with biomarker scientists to develop those ideas experimentally.

  • You have interest or experience working with high dimensional multi-omic data (e.g. single cell sequence assays, genotype or WGS data, proteomics data, etc.), or with building artificial intelligence/machine learning models.

  • You are able to present complex results, both verbally and in writing, to computational and non-computational audiences.

  • You are willing to collaborate with colleagues across time zones.

Required skills:

  • You have demonstrated competence in languages such as R or Python for bioinformatics analyses.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position of California is $20.00 - $50.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
