2024 Summer Intern - Genentech Computational Sciences (gCS)

Department Summary

The Department of Computational Biology and Translation (CBT) of Genentech Early Development (gRED) Computational Sciences (gCS) seeks exceptional machine learning engineers who have a demonstrated background in machine learning, a passion for technical problem-solving, and a proven ability to implement ideas from research into production.

The group provides a dynamic and challenging environment for cutting-edge, multidisciplinary research including access to heterogeneous data sources, and close links to internal Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED) partners. Our mission is to develop and apply methods for medical image analysis, biomarker discovery and monitoring neurodegenerative diseases. Engineers will primarily focus on the deep learning subfield of machine learning but should be broadly interested in implementing methods that can help drive and sharpen the research questions we study. Fundamentally, our research goals allow us to collaborate closely with and–contribute uniquely to–many different project teams across the company.

This internship position is located in San Francisco, onsite

Key Responsibilities

  • You will be expected to solve core engineering challenges including the design, implementation, and scaling of our machine learning framework and algorithms.

  • You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams across gRED to solve complex problems in the Medical sciences.

  • You will be expected to help manage and scale different data pipelines for training and inference.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks , full time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are (Required)

Required Education:

  • - Must have attained a Master's Degree

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student)

  • Must have attained a PhD

Required Majors: Computer Science, Mathematics, Bioinformatics, Statistics, or related degree/field.

Required skills: Qualifications

  • Solid experience in writing clean, efficient, and sustainable code in Python.

  • Experience with AI/ML frameworks such as PyTorch/PyTorch Lightning.

  • Hands-on experience with data modeling and analysis.

  • Experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS).

  • Intense curiosity about the biology of disease and eagerness to contribute to scientific and computational efforts.

  • 1+ years of professional experience in software development

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position in California is $38.00 - $50.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
